Class Profile - Fall 2009

Our Stories

Baker, Kurtis My name is Kurtis Baker and I was born and raised in the great state of Texas. I consider my hometown to be the small town of Roanoke, Texas. It is about twenty five minutes west on highway 114 from UD. It is actually where the famous golfer Byron Nelson grew up as well. Growing up, I found it to be a fine place to run around and get old. I am a product of the Northwest Independent School District and received my diploma for Justin Northwest High School. I cannot completely recall how and why I ended up at UD, but have enjoyed my time here thus far. I am taking this class to satisfy Interdisciplinary Studies degree. My family is a large part of my life. I have three siblings. An older brother, John, who graduated from Austin College; a younger sister, Ellen, who is a senior at Northwest, and an even younger sister, Emily, who is 12 and enjoying middle school. When we get together as a family, we have been known to sing some mean karaoke or rock out on the latest version of guitar hero with emphasis on TPI (Total Performance Index). Other than that, I play lots of soccer. I enjoy fishing when I get the chance and sometimes just watching the sunset after a long day. Lastly, I feel the technology is exciting. The things we can do now are amazing and feel that if used in the correct manner, technology can help both education and society.

Baker, Paul

Hello, my name is Paul Baker.  I am from a city in northeast Indiana called Ft. Wayne.  I lived outside the city in the country and it was a nice place to grow up.  I went grade school at St. Therese and high school at Bishop Luers, both are located in Ft. Wayne.  I am a business major and a senior. I would like to get into sports management or possibly finance.  I have a very large family and I am the third of nine.  There are five girls and four boys and my two older siblings are married and have children.  I am taking this class to become more familiar with computers and I also think it will be helpful to be able to create a website in my future in business. I think that technology is becoming commonplace in almost all of society, and it is important to learn to use it properly.

Bennett, Kathryn My name is Chloe Bennett, and I am a junior Theology major.  I am commutting this semester from my home in Southlake, which is an adventure!  I thought I would hate living at home, but I am actually finding more and more that I enjoy the feeling of being responsible for the place where I live and feeling like I have a place to go that is really mine.  I have a very small family by UD standards, just my parents and my brother and I, but my extended family almost all lives in the area - 44 in all!  My brother left for his first year of college this August, which is very exciting for us, so we don't really hear from him much at the moment.  My family has a very Benidictine view of hospitality, so you are welcome to drop by any time you need help with anything or just a place to rest and have some home-cooked food!  My mother is an amazing cook and I am trying to learn from her.  My friends say I'm not doing too badly, but I think that's just because they want me to keep cooking for them...  I am a professional harpist, when it is called for, but as this is not a very steady job, I am also working at Journey Pediatric Rehabilitation, an OT center for children with Asperger's/Autism spectrum disorders.  I'm very excited about taking this class, mostly because I love the education department here and am very much looking forward to being an educator of some sort in the future.

Broe, Ruth

Hey I’m Ruth Broe but everyone calls me Rudy.  I know it’s a boy’s name, but I prefer it to the grandma name, Ruth, I was given.  I have lived in Maryland my whole life up until two years ago when I came to UD.  Now that I’ve lived in Texas, I love the green trees and cold winters of Maryland so much more.  I do not plan on staying in Texas longer than I have to, so after school hopefully I’ll move to a cooler place.

I am the middle child in my family, I have an older brother who prepared me for the ways of immature boys and made me somewhat of a tomboy, and a younger sister who forced me to play dolls with her and helped me not lose touch with my girly side.  I have played sports my whole life up until college.  Along with sports, I have recently taken up an interest in music and have been teaching myself to play the guitar.  It’s a work in progress but who knows, maybe someday I can be the music teacher at an elementary school.

Before UD, I attended a community college in Maryland for a year.  I absolutely hated it, but if I had to say one positive thing about the experience it would be that it made me ready to leave home.  I declared my major as interdisciplinary studies in education just last semester, and so far, it seems to be working out.  My main reason for wanting to be a teacher is I love children, and I believe I should enjoy what I’m doing now, rather than suffer through boring business classes and hope that I find a job that interests me for a few months.  With teaching I know there will always be something interesting to make me stick with it; you never know what will come out of a child’s mouth.  So for now, education is the most enjoyable thing I can do and know I will enjoy.  I am taking Computer Problem Solving because it is required for my major and also because I can’t have the children I teach know more about computers than me.  The class will also hopefully help me create interesting ways to teach children.

Edison, Joseph My name is Joseph Edison and I am from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa was a great place to grow up. I love tulsa. I came to ud mainly to play basketball. My major at the moment is biology and I am considering being a marine biologist, but I am still confused about what I want to do. I have four brothers and one sister. My family is great to have around. I like sports a lot basketball in particular. I am taking this course to better my understanding of computers and the problems that may occur when using a computer because technology is a great tool to augment the learning process.

Ekmark, Travis

Hello, my name is Travis Ekmark. I was born in Colorado, but I was raised on a navy base called Yokosuka, Japan. Both of my parents are teachers—my dad is a health teacher and my mom is a P.E. teacher—for DoDDS, which stands for the Department of Defense District Schools. Growing up in Japan, I have been shown, and have grown accustomed to a very different culture from that of the United States. Due to the fact that Japan has a very low crime rate—there are no firearms allowed in Japan—my parents let me wander about by myself/with friends at a much earlier age than they would have had we lived in the states. Because of this, I feel like I was able to learn to be more independent. I attended elementary, middle school, and high school on the navy base and up until the time I began my career at UD that was all I knew, education wise. I was drawn to the University of Dallas through my interest in playing basketball at the collegiate level. Now that I am here, I plan to earn my bachelor degree in history, and at the same time earn my accreditation in education—that’s why I am taking the Computer Problem Solving class. Technology, for me, is useful when I need it to be. When I need to do something on the computer, technology comes in handy. I have no obsession with technology, and I have no quarrels with it either.

 Frost, Meghan

Hello!  My name is Meghan Frost and I am a military brat; consequently, I do not have a hometown.  I was born in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and I went to high school in Slidell, Louisiana and I have lived everywhere in between.  My parents (Corky and Michelle) are originally from San Antonio, Texas and my family currently lives an hour outside of the city in the small town of Bandera.   I have three siblings: Ben (Notre Dame ’10), Molly (Bandera HS ’11), and Emily (Bandera HS ’13).  A quirky tradition is that we always have Mexican food for Christmas dinner.  I am a junior here at UD and am a Theology major.  Also, I am an RA in Jerome Hall, I work at CSO, lead FCA, and I play basketball and lacrosse.  My intention is to join the Peace Corps after graduation, teach until I pay off my loans, and ultimately go to Trade school.  I am taking this course because I hope to obtain a teaching certificate before I graduate and this is a required course.   Technology is society frustrates me because I feel that common courtesy has been lost.  Phone manners are neglected, and internet etiquette too often goes untaught.  This is unfortunate because technology is phenomenal and has great potential for our future and for the future of education.

 Funes, Teresa

am Teresa Funes,. After a couple transfers I now have five years of university shelf life and am attempting to earn my undergrad degree in Psychology and Education. I am originally from Santa Barbara, California living about five minutes from the mountains and 15 from the beach. It continues to be favorite abode to take a well needed breather but I after having spent a large part of my life now in Texas, I can no longer say my heart nor home is nestled in my hometown of Cali. I hope to finally become a certified Child Life Specialist after graduation. I have worked 5+ yrs as a Child Life volunteer/intern/assistant in both San Antonio and Dallas area hospitals. I fell in love with the job within the first moments of meeting the children at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital and have since then continued to develop my experience in the field. As far as my computer skills go I’d have to say that I am a quick learner with them and am familiar with most programs out there (C++, JavaScript, Microsoft Office, Mac, SPSS, etc.) The only down side to my relationship with the computer is that I seem to be a magnet to computer problems. I’ve had three of my computer crash in the past year, all differing in their diagnoses. So I’d love to help as much as I can with computers but we may have to review the risk factors involved.

I have created a website in the past for my grandfathers books: carlraswan.com I enjoyed working on it a lot and am looking forward to at least starting another website.

   Hyde, Nicholas

Kryder, Gabrielle  Hello, my name is Gabrielle Kryder, but usually referred to as Abbey.  I am the fifth child in a family of eight, which includes seven girls and only one boy.  I am from a small town outside of Fort Wayne, Indiana, surrounded by cornfields and farms.  It is a nice community to live in because there is not the busy hustle and bustle of a big town.  I went to a small Catholic school for elementary and middle school, where there were only nine kids in my graduating eighth grade class.  My high school was not much bigger, so I was accustomed to a smaller classroom environment, much like UD’s.  This was one of the major deciding factors that brought me to UD.  I am majoring in Elementary Education and am a semester behind after taking some time off to decide which area of study I wanted to pursue. This is my first education course; I have really only taken core classes so far.  Once I graduate from UD, I hope to teach the lower levels of elementary school at a Catholic school.

Martin, Catherine My name is Katie Martin and I’m a Senior Education major (EC-6 and hoping to teach kindergarten or 1st grade). I have one younger brother who is attending Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and studying Mechanical Engineering. I was born in Evanston, Illinois, but have lived in Austin, Texas for the past 18 years. I think Austin is a really great city and hope to be able to live and work there in the future. I particularly enjoy the young and eclectic atmosphere, the rolling hills and river, the variety of out-door related activities, the great restaurants and shops and of course the fact that it’s the live music capital of the world (though I don’t take advantage of this fact as much as I should). I have experienced a wide range of educational atmospheres. I attended a Montessori preschool, public elementary school, Waldorf middle and high school, and homeschooled my senior year of high school. I am a re-admit to UD. I attended UD my freshman year, then transferred to St. Edward’s University in Austin for two years and returned to UD in the fall of 2007. After having had the experience of another university with which to compare UD, I realized that the University of Dallas is truly a gem. The Catholic atmosphere, sincerity and dedication of many of the students, the rigorous core curriculum and the dedication of professors create, in my mind a superior educational environment that many universities strive for, but few achieve. When I returned to UD in ’07, I was re-admitted as a Theology major, but chose to pursue elementary education certification last semester. My decision to change majors was difficult, but ultimately my passion for child psychology and alternative educational philosophies combined with my love for children and my desire to help them, led me to settle on education. While I’m not sure that I will ultimately stay in a traditional teaching position (I am considering going on to graduate school to pursue training in art therapy or some type of child development research) I know that I see myself in some type of position that nourishes the souls of young people.  In addition to my interest in education and psychology, I enjoy painting, drawing, playing piano and guitar and cooking with friends. I am taking this course because it is required for my education degree and I think technology can be a useful tool in teaching, particularly for gathering information and presenting information in certain contexts. However, I should also note that I am generally opposed to introducing technology to children at early ages. I believe that children need more tactile and natural experiences that allow them to make the most of the time where they need to be developing their motor skills, their awakening senses, and their eagerness to actively engage the world around them.

Mistrot, Daniel I was born in Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina. Our city's nickname is "The City of Oaks" because of the large number of oak trees that grow everywhere. It was a great place to grow up, because it was large enough to allow access to a wide varity of things (such a quality Catholic schools) but small enough that much of the city was still made up of large tracks of forest (great for exploring). My primary school (K-8) was Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, and I attended Cardinal Gibbons High School. This year I will be a senior at UD. I came to UD because I was attracted by the small size, the strong Catholic identity, and the liberal arts education offered here. I am a History major who aspires to become a doctor, and I will *hopefully* be attending medical school somewhere next year. I have three siblings. John (24) graduated from UD in 2008. Sarah (22) just graduated from James Madison University and will hopefully be attending graduate school to become a Physicians Assistant next year. Will (19) the youngest, is currently discerning a vocation to the monastic life. My Dad is a retired heart surgeon and my Mom was a nurse before she married my Dad. My favorite hobbies include swimming (especially in the ocean), rock climbing and playing rugby. I enrolled in this course because I took several computer classes in middle school and high school and enjoyed them a lot and I am looking forward to continuing to improve my knowledge of computers and the many things they have to offer. I see technology as a positive good that continues to better the lives of billions of people throughout the world every day. I think it logical that it should play a role in education since the purpose of technology is to make things easier and who doesn't want to make it easier to learn?

Moon, Elissa My name is Elissa Moon.  I grew up in Bridge City, Texas, a little town south near the Texas Louisiana border.  My town of 10,000 people is near many oil refineries, which constitutes the economy of our area.  My town was hit by hurricane Ike last fall and flooded pretty much the entire town.  My house received 6 ft. of water, so since then my parents have moved a little further inland to Beaumont, Texas.  I am a senior Economics and Finance major, working an internship at Scottrade, a discount brokerage firm.  My future plans consist of working full-time and continuing school at night to receive my MBA in perhaps Corporate Finance.  I have three brothers.  Two older brothers who live in Dallas, went to SMU, and are married and one younger brother who is a senior in high school.  My dad and two older brothers all have degrees in computer engineering.  My passion in life is dancing.  I started taking dance lessons when I was 4 yrs. old.  I have taken ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, pointe.  In high school, I made drill team my freshman year, and became an officer of the drill team my senior year.  I am driven to succeed in everything I do, and hopefully this class will contribute to my future goals.

Pen, Amy I am Amy Pen A Junior Drama Major here at University of Dallas. I am passionate about a few things one of which is theater the other is showing and teaching people that EVERYONE has a place in the theater. That is my vision and why I want to graduate with my teaching certification. For instance do not consider myself an actress because even more than that I love being organized and in charge. So, I stage manage. I don't know where life will take me, but what I do know is that it will involve Drama and I will probably keep calling my mom several times a day as I do now. In fact the thing I hate most about returning home to Houston is that my parents go from being my friends (when I don't live with them) back to being my parents. But I absolutly love my parents and two younger sisters and try to visit whenever I can...(but just for a weekend).

Pettit, Noah I grew up in the small but vibrant town of Fairfax, located in the beautiful mountains of Marin County, just north of San Francisco.  I enjoyed my childhood in Fairfax as I experienced many things.  It is by no means a typical town but instead is diverse and colorful, attracting people of all sorts and from many places.  I attended Sir Francis Drake High School, a California Distinguished High School.  My high school years were very fun and I learned a lot.  I am the youngest of four boys, three minutes younger than my twin brother, Adam.  I have no sisters.  I play basketball for the University of Dallas; this year I will be relieving Travis Eckmark, senior basketball star, when he is tired or thirsty.  Although Travis does not pass the ball it is for the best; many think basketball is a team game but it's also about winning so you can see why we need Travis taking as many shots as possible.

Simpkins, Richard

My name is Richard Simpkins, and I’m from Garland, TX.  I am, however, the first American in my family.  Both my parents are from South Africa, and moved to the US shortly before I was born.  My mother’s side of the family all moved to Texas, while my father’s side (except for my father) all stayed in a small town called Amanzimtoti, near Durbin.  I have worked off and on in various aspects of the computer and internet industry, including TI, GTE, TXU, and REI.  Most recently, I worked in social networking, helping to plan a new strategy to use geolocation to help people plan outdoor activities.  I initially came to UD to leave the technology field, but have recently come to the conclusion that technology is an integral part of any profession, especially teaching.  I’m taking this class as part of a certification requirement, but I  also hope to get a lot of information about classroom integration, here, as I have little experience with technology in a classroom setting.  My hobbies include hiking and SCUBA diving, and I am planning a 1,000 mile hike across France and Spain, next summer.

Slattery, Patrick  Technically, according to the postman, I am from Middle Ridge Wisconsin, but its not really a town at all.  In reality, Middle Ridge is just an unincorporated cluster of four houses and one rather large church, which sits on top of a hill that overlooks two valleys.  I grew up on a farm and for during my early years, I was a bit of a savage.  My family, which consists of four girls and five boys started out as one of those tragically homeschooled families.  We were anti-social, rude, uncouth, dirty, violent farm kids.  Since we were forced to only hang out with each other all the time, my brothers and I mostly entertained ourselves by playing in our woods.  The game we played most had no name, but if we had named it the name would have been something like "find your little brother and pound him violently until he cries."  Although it was painful, it was a pretty entertaining game.  Thankfully, we all eventually went to schools, developed manners, made friends, and became slightly more sociable.  All in all we positively are not crippled socially like some homeschooling families unfortunately are. This is getting a bit long winded, so to summarize the rest of the email, I came to UD because it is a good school far from home, this is the only school I have attended, I only know I want to be happy when I grow up, I wish I had a secret life that was interesting, and I am taking this course because I work an outside job for 25 hours a week and this one fit best into my schedule.

Streett, Paul  My name is Paul Streett and I hail from the beautiful state of California. I am the second of five children, four of which have gone or are in the process of going to UD. I live twenty-five minutes north of San Francisco in a semi-small town called Novato. It was, and still is, a wonderful town to grow up and live in. As a child I was homeschooled by my mother along with my other siblings. I grew up playing basketball and baseball, basketball being my favorite. I homeschooled unitl high school, where I then went to Trinity Prep in the Napa Valley, or the Wine Country as many people call it. It was a forty minute drive that I made everyday there and back, often times very disgruntled. Traveling in the car was and still isn't my favorite thing to do. I grew accustomed to the drive though and soon did not mind it, especially when I was old enough to drive myself and listen to my favorite music. At Trinity I continued playing basketball and baseball for the high school and had lots of fun doing so. My father coached me the final two years of basketball along with my brother, who began going to school two years after I began. From high school I went to the University of Dallas, following my oldest sister Anne Marie. I'm not quite sure what drove me to UD, whether it was the fact that it was the only school I applied for, or becasue it was a solid Catholic school, or whether it was the opportunity for me to continue my basketball career? Whatever it was I have been happy with my choice and have met many wonderful people. I have had fun playing basketball, going to Rome, and meeting new people. The education has been great as well and if I had to do it again I would make the same choice. My Dallas career as an Economics and Finance major is almost over and I'm still waivering on what I want to do. I have thought something in the financial field, such as a financial advisor, but I still am not quite sure. Special interests of mine include playing sports and staying active, music, and water skiing. I have always enjoyed technology and messing around with computers and equipment like that, but I would not consider myself a "pro" by any means. I think there are many uses for technology, especially computers as everyone knows, and will enjoy honing my computer skills.

White, Peter Hello, my name is Pete White and I am a senior here at the University of Dallas.  I was born in Chicago, Illinois but when I was eight months old my family moved to a small town about forty minutes north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin called Slinger.  The only thing I know about Slinger is that during the Prohibition era it was a bootlegger town surrounded by a wall with gunmen all around it.  Today, it’s kind of a farm town but every year is becoming increasingly suburban.  I have seven siblings – two older brothers, two older sisters, and three younger sisters.  My dad is a doctor and runs his own family practice while my mom has always been a stay at home mother.  Before my mom and dad met each other they were both Delta Force special ops assassins, so that’s pretty cool.  When I was young I attended St. Boniface Grade School, for high school I attended Marquette University High School.  I’ve always enjoyed sports and participated in them at both of these schools.  I played baseball and basketball. One game I scored 72 points in basketball by making 24 three pointers and in a baseball game I hit 5 home runs and batted for the cycle twice.  Then I lost all the talent I had and now I don’t play any organized sports, but I still like to participate in recreational games.  Every sibling older than me has attended the University of Dallas.  That is one reason why I chose to go to UD but also because I liked my visits as a junior and senior in high school.  I have really enjoyed my time here at UD.
