E-Diary #1

    This class is just going along swimmingly so far.  I'm excited to learn how to do all the things I never knew how... like making little moving words, and web pages...and actually learning how to make a spreadsheet....instead of just guessing.  The website quiz was a little confusing, but I guess that's how it is supposed to be.  I eventually did find everything though and I'm becoming more acquainted with the class website the more I have to use it.  It's going to be a busy semester so I've decided to kill two birds with one stone and base my project in this class on my thesis on Silas Marner (which I haven't even read yet because of studying for comps).  Other classes are hard and there are many of them, this last semester.   This class will be a fun, creative way, of releasing some tension.  I love art classes, and since I'm not taking any this semester, I'll really want to get all my creative tension in this class.  Oh, plus I'm seriously thinking about going into teaching, so this class will really be helpful for that.....or for any other job for that matter! Not much else to say this time around. 

E-Diary #2

            I decided that after school I’m going to teach.  So this class is becoming more and more for me!  We’ve started creating our Webs.  It’s a little confusing but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it.  This diary isn’t going to be very exciting.  My life is dominated with studying for my English comprehensive exams.  Yikes……. But I have done the Internet scavenger hunt.  It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.  But it was a bit time consuming.  I really like using the + sign and quotation marks.  I didn’t know about that before and it made my searches quick and simple.  The power point on searching the Internet effectively was really really helpful.  I’m anxious to get started putting my own stuff together!

E-Diary #3


            Well, I’ve finished my English comps and I’m well on my way to starting my thesis.  There’s no end in sight to this busy semester!  I really like learning how to build a web page.  It sort of seems like two classes in one: a computer class and an art class.   It’s been a little hard for me to decide fully on a theme.  I’ve dropped the Silas Marner theme.  I figure I’ll be seeing a lot of that book this semester, and I’d rather get away from my thesis for a while.  I think I’ve finally decided on a “Flowers” theme.  I thought of it because my friend Mary Baird is getting married and we’re looking for flowers she might like.  It was a little confusing getting started, but I’m starting to get familiar with the FrontPage program.   Now the only part I’m really having a lot of trouble with is keeping everything organized and saved properly!  It’s confusing having to save things to multiple places and having to keep checking to see if things are properly linked and in the right places.

          Building a rubric is pretty difficult.  With all these blank pages in front of me, I’m not sure what exactly I want to put in them.  I think it will help to take a good look at some websites that I like… to get ideas.  Also, I guess I need to pay attention to the things I don’t like about websites for my upcoming Excel Project.  


E-Diary #5

          Ive spent a while on the Excel project.  It was really confusing at first because I had no idea how to use excel.  I had to use it once before for a job, but I just pretended how to do it, which ended up being really time consuming.   It also took a little while to find all the websites I want to use in my excel project.  There are so many options!  Im still having trouble filling out entries in my rubric.  I know what I want in my website, but I cant seem to translate my ideas into writing.  It will come eventually, I hope.  It was kind of fun to review the websites for my excel project.  Ive never really paid that much attention to why I do or dont like a website, and it made me much more aware of how to form my own website.

            I really cant tear myself away from my FrontPage project.  Theres so much I want to do and Im having a blast discovering new ways of putting together my pages.  I liked the readings in for the Technology Forum.  They brought up things Ive honestly never really considered, like copyright laws.  Also, I really enjoyed the reading for teachers who want to be more aware of plagiarism in their students work.  I always wondered how I would figure out if someone plagiarized and it gave me some great points to look for.  Also, Im realizing how important it is to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of technology on the youth of America.  While the Internet can be an amazing learning tool, it can also be pretty scarey how much kids have access to these dayseven for academic purposes.  There are quite a few websites that are more than willing to help kids plagiarize.

            The skills check went better than I thought it would.  The hardest part for me was figuring out how to put the new web in my current web.  It wasn’t too hard, I was just afraid that I would make a mistake and some how screw up all the work I’ve done so far.   Everything else went really well I think.  The ‘personal statement’ made me laugh…. which is always good during a test!  I’m interested, and a little nervous, to make a PowerPoint.  Can’t wait to see how it turns out!

        I’ve decided on a PowerPoint project.  I’m going to keep going with the flower theme, but the project will be geared towards kids and helping them learn the basics about flowers: how they grow, the main parts, how to plant them, etc.  I think I can make it a really great teaching tool, with the focus on helping kids learn, understand, and interact with the project, instead of just giving them the information I want them to learn.  The PowerPoint stuff is really cool.    I’ve had a really great time playing around with all the movements and sounds.  There is so much you can do with it!


E-Diary #9

        Using Inspiration was really neat.  I’ve never seen a program like that before.  I never thought I could come up with so many ideas just brainstorming.  It really helped to make an overall connection for the purpose, organization, and point of my PowerPoint project.  It WAS a little frustrating to get things to connect with arrows… the program was a bit temperamental.  Inspiration would be a wonderful program to have throughout the whole school.


E-Diary #10

          My PowerPoint presentation went pretty well, but it didnt go as smoothly as I hoped it would.  I thought my focus was supposed to be demonstrating how I want to use my PowerPoint as a teaching tool.  So, I wasnt completely prepared for the fact that I wouldnt be able to explain WHY I created the PowerPoint the way I did.  I spent a lot of time really thinking about how to make my PowerPoint a great tool, and I didnt get the chance to convey that to the class.  Oh well, its in my script!  Everyone elses PowerPoints have been really interesting.  Im really seeing everyones creative sidewhich I havent got to look at yet!


E-Diary #11

            The interactive project was fun and new, but a little scary, because I had to find and understand a new program all by my lonesome!  It went well though, after a few mistakes.  I actually had to make my quiz twice, but now I’ll never forget how to do it!  Graduation is coming up…yikes o yikes.  Life is staring me in the face…and it looks pretty mean.  I have no clue what lies ahead of me.  I’m feeling very unprepared…and poor.   I’m so lucky to have such good friends and parents who support me even though I seem to have absolutely no direction.  And I’m even luckier to have gone to UD because no matter how lost I get, I know I always have a home here. Sniff sniff.  Thanks for a really cool class Mrs. K!
