Part 1: Legal, Ethical, and Diversity Issues

1. Copyright RulesFair Use of Copyrighted Material , Copyright Crash Course , and A Proposal For Educational Fair Use Guidelines For Digital Images

These articles were extremely helpful in helping me understand something I knew very little about!  I strongly agree with copyright laws, but it's true, it is very hard to know exactly when you are not playing by the rules when it comes to technology.  Everything on the internet is so easy to access, it's hard to tell when using things, pictures and music especially, is too much.  At first, I was confused by the articles.  Some of the ideas presented are as vague as the topic they are trying to explain!  But, lists and links to other information really helped me understand more of the rules and the issues at hand.  As an educator, or someone who works for a university, it is really important to keep checking for updates of copyright rules.  A teacher can pass on this important knowledge to students.

2. Student Plagiarism Internet plagiarism: A teacher's combat guide

I knew I had to read this article when I saw the title.  I always wondered how teachers figured out if kids were plagiarizing, especially if the students were getting their information from as vast a place as the internet.  This is a great guide to catching your students in the act!  But also, it made me realize how truly difficult it can be for students to do their own work without being tempted to use the ideas of others.  With the internet, information and ideas  are easily accessed and therefore readily available for students to take.  It makes me wonder whether or not the internet is taking away much of the inventive imagination and critical thinking skills of our youth.

Part 2:  Integrating Technology into Teaching and Learning

1. Computers as Critical Thinking Tools. Computers as Mindtools for Engaging Learners in Critical Thinking

This article helped me realize that the use of Mindtools is definitely an important part of teaching.  It looks to the best interest of the student by requiring that they actively participate in their learning experience.  The description of semantic organizations tools was very interesting to me.  Personally, I think that the organization of the subject at hand actually reinforces the learning of that subject.  When a subject is organized, it is easier for a student to draw connections.  Microworlds sound very interesting as well because of the interactive element involved in testing things out.  the computer is a great tool to helping any type of student learn a subject by the means most useful to them.  For example, a more visual student may use visualization tools to better understand a subject.

2. Teaching With Technology. Learning to teach with technology: From integration to actualization.

Technology is such a big part of every person's life, so it is especially important to include the use of technology in school learning.  As new teachers, who have had more experience with technology, move into schools I think there will be more use of technology in learning.  But it is important to enlighten teachers as to HOW to use technology in the classroom.  I really enjoyed reading about the practical examples of using technology in the classroom.  It looks like the activities are fun for the kids and also encourage them to really take part in their learning experience!  Technology can make learning interactive and fun.

Part 3: Health and Safety Issues

1. Ethics.  Internet Safety and Ethics for the Classroom

I'm sure that Mrs. Wohfiel is not the only teacher who comes across a student's abuse of their internet privileges.  This article is important for all teachers, to make them aware of more careful monitoring in the classroom.  The article provides wonderful resources for parents, teachers, and students.  It is important that all three groups work together and are aware of the dangers available on the internet.  I really like the glossary attached to the article because it will better help non-technology users understand internet info!

2. Internet Safety.  Addressing Issues of Internet Safety

I really enjoyed the 5 tips available in this article.  It gives both teachers and parents great tools for encouraging responsible use on the internet.  It is wonderful that there are programs concerned with the safety of children.  With the expanded use of the internet in the classroom, kids are opened up to new worlds.  But since we can't guarantee that every section of the internet is safe, it is important to make kids aware of the dangers and encourage positive/practical/safe use.
