Ares
One
of the two sons of Zeus and Hera.
Ares is the brother of Hephaestus and
Hebe. Ares is a god of war, but a far different
type of war than Athena. Ares is usually associated with fighting such as
the sacking of a city or slaughtering of civilians. He is often associated
with Aphrodite, the wife of his brother Hephaestus.
He is usually accompanied in battle by Pain and Panic, his sons with
Aphrodite. Later myths also have
Eros being a son of their union.
The Greeks despised Ares. The Romans, on the other hand, associated him
with their war god Mars. The founder of Rome,
Romulus, was in
fact said to be his son. Mars was a god to be revered, unlike the chaotic
despoiler Ares.
