Gorgons

These three sisters live beyond the western ocean.  The Gorgons have wings, golden scales for armor, as well as serpents for hair.  Anyone who looked upon a Gorgon would be turned to stone.

Two of the Gorgons, Sthenno and Euryale, are children of Phorcys and Ceto.  The third, Medusa, was turned into a Gorgon as punishment for having sex with Poseidon in the temple of Athena.  Because of this, Medusa alone of the three Gorgons is mortal; she was being punished for her affair with PoseidonMedusa was later killed by the hero Perseus.
