ProconsulAfter serving as a consul, his imperium, the power to command an army, would sometimes be continued for one year. Proconsuls were much more common later in the Republic as Rome expanded its borders. The Senate would appoint the consul to serve as proconsul (govenor) over a major province, one typically with its own military forces. |
