Scipio Africanus

Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus

(236 - 183 BC)

Himself the son of a famous general who died while fighting Hannibal, Scipio showed great military prowess at an early age.  By 25, he was leading an army into Spain, which he soon conquered.  Then, he led his army into Africa to attack Carthage itself.  This moved forced Hannibal to retreat back to Africa.  At the battle of Zama 202, Scipio defeated Hannibal's army and ended the Second Punic War.

Scipio went on to serve with distinction, including achieving the rank of consul and  censor.  Later, however, he came under attack from his enemies, namely Cato the Elder.  Scipio was forced to retire to his estate outside of Rome, where he died living a rustic and peaceful life.
