Plebeians

In Rome, this was the class of citizens who were not among the privileged Patricians and wealthy Equestrians.  In the early Republic, Plebeians were excluded from most public offices, and could not marry a Patrician.  During the conflict of orders, the Plebeians won these and other rights, which were eventually written down in the twelve tables.
